WW gardening tip 4

WW tip of the monthWater tanks-1Temporary water storage of small volumes of water is sometimes a critical issue. Saving and storing water requires extra care to avoid contamination. Here are some tips for effective water storage:

Use Correct Containers

  • Use food-grade plastics marked with recycling numbers 1, 2, 4, or 5. Label the container with a sticker that says “Drinking water”.
  • Avoid using old milk jugs and juice boxes.
  • Specifically designed plastic water storage tanks or stainless steel tanks are ideal for rainwater collection.

Preserve and disinfect your water

  • Chlorine:
    • Tap water with chlorine is ready for storage.
    • For collected water from the borehole or rainwater for drinking, add 2 drops of non-scented chlorine bleach per 2 liters of clean water (other appropriate methods may be used).

 Where You Store is Important

  • Store water in dark, cool places away from sunlight.

Water should be replaced every six months

  • Rotate and or use any stored water regularly to avoid contamination buildup.

Account for other water needs

  • When storing water consider other water needs beyond drinking, including bathing, cleaning, and first aid.
