Temporary water storage of small volumes of water is sometimes a critical issue. Saving and storing water requires extra care to avoid contamination. Here are some tips for effective water storage:
Use Correct Containers
- Use food-grade plastics marked with recycling numbers 1, 2, 4, or 5. Label the container with a sticker that says “Drinking water”.
- Avoid using old milk jugs and juice boxes.
- Specifically designed plastic water storage tanks or stainless steel tanks are ideal for rainwater collection.
Preserve and disinfect your water
- Chlorine:
- Tap water with chlorine is ready for storage.
- For collected water from the borehole or rainwater for drinking, add 2 drops of non-scented chlorine bleach per 2 liters of clean water (other appropriate methods may be used).
Where You Store is Important
- Store water in dark, cool places away from sunlight.
Water should be replaced every six months
- Rotate and or use any stored water regularly to avoid contamination buildup.
Account for other water needs
- When storing water consider other water needs beyond drinking, including bathing, cleaning, and first aid.
